Back by popular demand! Tubing on the Jackson River
Monday, July 21, 2025
Tube down the crystal clear waters of the scenic Jackson River near Covington with Allegheny Outdoors Outfitters. Take in the great mountain views as you relax and let the river move you gently along. This is a lazy river float!
This Trek & Tube experience requires you to carry your tube for a 0.3 mile (1500’) walk along the Jackson River Bike Trail to launch on private property, and then enjoy a leisurely two-hour float around a 2.25 mile horseshoe bend back to the Adventure shop. Participants must know how to swim and be comfortable in the water. Life vests are provided. Cost is $22.

New this year: If our group is larger than ten participants (which I expect it will be), we will have a river guide join us for our adventure. Participants will be asked to contribute to the $100 cost for the guide.

- Use this link to purchase your Newcomer’s Group ticket(s). You will be asked to sign an online waiver (I promise you, this is not a wild ride, more of a lazy river float!) On the purchase form, please write “With Lexington Newcomers Group” in the comments box. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first served basis, so I encourage you to purchase your ticket(s) as soon as you are ready to put this on your calendar.
- Let me know that you have signed up and if you will join us for dinner after. Reply via email at janethgibson@gmail.com.
To recap: Use the link above to sign up on your own AND let me know (janethgibson@gmail.com) when you have purchased your ticket.
Carpooling: As the date nears, I will send you a list of participants for making arrangements to carpool, if desired. The drive from Lexington is approximately 50 minutes.
Optional Dinner After: Celebrate our adventure at Jack Mason Tavern in Clifton Forge. https://jackmasonstavern.com/

What to Expect:
We will meet in front of the Alleghany Outdoors building by 2:15. Once everyone is gathered, we will get our tubes, lifejackets and receive safety and “how to” instructions from a staff member. Waterproof bags and push paddles are offered for no additional cost. We will then carry our tubes for a 0.3 mile (1500’) walk along the Jackson River Bike Trail to launch on private property. Tubes have a mesh bottom. There are restrooms at this building.
The ride is 2.25 mile horseshoe bend back to the shop with anticipated float time of 2 to 2.5 hours. You may bring beverages and snacks, but no alcohol allowed.
What to bring Suggestions from Alleghany Outdoors:
- River clothes, bathing suits, shorts, tee shirts. (I will wear shorts, t-shirt and Keen sandals and bring a UV shirt. Bathing suits aren’t really needed for a float, unless you want to spend your time out of your tube. Just plan to get wet!)
- Sunscreen, Hat, Sunglasses
- Water and snacks
- Change of clothes left in your car for after the trip
